Photosensitive Vaporisation of the Prostate (Green Light)
Introduction
Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is the 'gold' standard operation for improving troublesome symptoms due to benign enlargement of the prostate gland (BPE). This is an ageing process and occurs at varing rates in different individuals. TURP does have significant side effects and associated morbidity. Consequently, minimally invasive techniques have been developed and trialled. The majority, however, have been discontinued from clinical practice due to their ineffectiveness and complications.
The greenLight PVP system overcomes these problems by utilising a high powered KTP-YAG laser to vaporise the centre of the prostate leaving a wider channel thus markedly improving your urinary symptoms.
The advantages are:
The operation can be performed as a day case procedure
As a consequence of red absorption of the laser, bleeding is reduced to near zero
The cathether emptying your bladder can be removed around 24 hrs after the operation
To date, long term results appear to be favourable and comparable to routine TURP
