PSA

Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is a glycoprotein that is secreted by the prostate gland. Any form of trauma to the prostate will cause leakage of PSA into the bloodstream. Thus, there are many reasons for having an elevated PSA: benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostate cancer, recent prostate biopsies, cystoscopy, prostate massage, prostatitis or recent ejaculation. PSA is useful for identifying abnormalities of the prostate. It is, however, not specific for prostate cancer.
